2rd Saturday Of Each Month: Stargazing At The Indiana Dunes
Join members from the Chicago Astronomical Society, Michiana Astronomical Society, and Calumet Astronomical Society with their telescopes as they introduce the night skies to visitors at the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore's Kemil Beach parking lot. The experts will train their massive telescopes on interesting features and discuss the incredible night sky. Please dress for the weather as there is no indoor space at the Kemil beach parking lot. It may be helpful to bring a pair of binoculars from home. Please note that the national lakeshore is in the Central Time Zone.
The Kemil Beach parking lot is located one mile north of U.S. Highway 12 on East State Park Road (300E). Sunday Hikes @ Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore
Bailly Cemetery Hike
Join a ranger-led hike to the historic Bailly Cemetery while learning about the history of the Bailly family. You can also learn about early settlers and farmers who came to this region in the 1800s as well.
Meet in the Bailly/Chellberg parking lot to enjoy a this fun hike every Sunday at 12:00 pm – 1:30 pm. Then you'll have the option to explore the interiors of both historic homes from 1:30 pm – 4:00 pm. The hike is not mandatory. You can meet the hikers at the Homesteads if you prefer. We recommend contacting the Visitor Center at 219-395-1882 for more information.
The Chellberg/Bailly parking lot is on Mineral Springs Road between U.S. 20 and Highway 12 in Porter, Indiana. Miller Woods Hike
Join a park ranger for a hike through the beautiful oak savanna of Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore's Miller Woods each Sunday afternoon at 1:30 pm. Hikes will vary in length depending on the interest and abilities of visitors. Meet at the Paul H Douglas Center for Environmental Education. Wear sturdy shoes and bring water and insect repellent.
The Paul H. Douglas Center for Environmental Education is located in the western portion of the national lakeshore at 100 North Lake Street, about one mile north of U.S. Highway 12.
